How mindfulness helps when moving home

Moving home is an immense life event that can cause significant stress. Mindfulness psychological techniques can reduce the anxiety and tension associated with moving.

Mindfulness is commonly defined as:

“The practice of being fully present and aware of one’s thoughts, feelings, sensations, and surroundings in the present moment without judgement. It involves focusing on the present moment and accepting it without attaching any labels or emotions to it.”

It is easy to become preoccupied with the extensive number of tasks that must be accomplished when moving, and worry endlessly about what can go wrong. Mindfulness is a reminder to concentrate on the present moment, the current task, rather than future ones. Another effective mindfulness strategy is grounding, particularly when confronted with overpowering negative emotions. Grounding concentrates on sensory perceptions. Observe five objects that you can visually perceive, four sensations that you can feel physically, three sounds, two smells in your immediate surroundings and one taste in your mouth. This approach moves attention away from negative thoughts and fosters an enhanced awareness of current sensory experiences.

When everything starts to feel a little too much during the moving process, grounding could be a great way for you to put everything back in proper perspective. Then, after you move into your new home. take time to walk and explore your new neighbourhood being present with everything you see, feel, and hear.
