Study measures true stress levels of moving home

Dr Willliam Chueng, a researcher at the University of Auckland Business School in New Zealand, has studied the stress levels caused by moving home and attempted to quantify it.

A paper co-authored by Dr Cheung and business analyst Daniel Wong analysed data on stress from homeowners and renters who had moved home. They found that the stress levels of homeowners were, on average, higher than renters. People who frequently move have higher stress levels than those who move infrequently. For some, moving home is detrimental to their mental health.

The study results, published in 2022, confirmed that most people experience stress when moving home. It is believed to be the first time the stress levels of moving were measured using the stress comparison Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS). Moving home scored 20 points on this scale compared to arranging a substantial mortgage, which measures 37 points. A maximum of 100 points of stress is reached, for example, when a partner dies.

There are strategies for reducing house moving stress. These include ensuring the move is well organised, accounting for plenty of time. Accept that you are likely to feel exhausted and anxious when moving. Throughout the process, be sure to look after yourself by eating well and taking regular breaks.
