Liverpool resident discovers method for furnishing home for free

When you rent or buy an unfurnished flat or home, you need enough furniture for the new home. Moving home is expensive and you may struggle to afford new furniture.

In his Liverpool ECHO article, Ray Bonsall describes how he furnished his new flat in Liverpool for practically no cost using the website Freecycle, where people list items they are giving away. All buyers have to do is collect the items once selected and agreed. Freecycle wants items to be reused rather than thrown away in landfills. Websites like GumTree also sell used furniture, with sections where free items are listed.

Though the choice of furniture offered on Freecyle is limited, Ray Bonsall was surprised at the quality of the furniture he found. His first find was a sofa bed that he collected from a woman who was clearing out her parents’ home. He also obtained a solid oak table, which he estimated was worth around £300 if restored.

The items on Freecyle are free, but collecting them by car or van is an added cost. Movers may also choose to secure some smaller items for his flat in charity shops at affordable prices.

If moving from an existing home, most people have some furniture for the new home, but usually don’t have everything. If on a tight budget you may be able to source additional furniture from Freecycle. For the rest of your belongings, consider using Merseyside Movers & Storers to get them to your new home. We are a Merseyside removal company that will be happy to take them to your new home.
