Before you move home, several businesses and organisations need to be contacted to cancel bills, update services and close accounts. Notifying some organisations of your change of address is a legal requirement.
Accounts with broadband, energy and water suppliers need changing to the new address or accounts closed, and new ones opened for the new home.
There is a legal obligation to notify the DVLA driving authority and HMRC tax office of the new address. You also have to inform local councils so that you are registered for council tax and are on the electoral roll.
Your employer or pension provider needs informing. You will probably require the TV licence transferred to the new address.
Banks and building societies also need updating. If you have credit cards or loans, the relevant financial organisation needs notifying. Update your home insurance with the new address. In some instances, there may be a charge for this.
Don’t forget to notify friends and family with your new address. Change the address on online services, subscriptions and e-commerce retailers.
Register with a doctor, dentist, optician, and vet and inform your existing health services that you are moving.
For a small fee, you can have mail sent to the old address redirected to the new one in case you forget to update some organisations that contact you by mail.
