Study reveals shortage of homes for older people

Age UK has revealed that 84% of expected household growth is among the over-65 age bracket, yet there is an acute shortage of housing suitable for the elderly.

Large sections of the ageing population are moving home. In a recent survey, 47% of respondents between the ages of 66 and 74 reported having moved since the age of 50.

Age UK asked older people why they found it difficult to move or find suitable housing. Over a third (36%) said that they are concerned about the lack of affordable homes. A majority of respondents (72%) said that they believed it was difficult to move after the age of 75.

Many homes are not suitable for older people. For example, homes with steps and basic bathrooms are difficult for older people with mobility issues. Homes in rural areas can be far from bus stops or train stations, making them unsuitable for older people who no longer drive.

Age UK wants a housing strategy that recognises the needs of people between the ages of 50 and 75. Charity director at Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, said:

“At the moment we are miles behind where we should be when it comes to the provision of good quality, easily adaptable homes suitable for our ageing population, but the sooner the Government addresses this, the quicker we will catch up.”

For elderly people who are moving home, it may be a good idea to talk to a leading Liverpool removal company like Merseyside Movers & Storers. We can take care of packing up your belongings and taking them to a new home.
