Government clarifies rules for Blue Badge holders moving house

An answer to a query by Lib Dem MP Calum Miller to the Department of Transport has clearly explained the rules for Blue Badge holders who move house, especially to another local authority area.

Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood said that there is no prohibition on Blue Badge holders transferring the details on the Blue Badge when they move house. Holders can simply inform the new council authority to ask for the Blue Badge information from the previous council, and the information will be securely transferred via the Blue Badge Digital Service.

The Blue Badge scheme helps people with a disability or health condition to park in a designated disabled parking space. In some public car parks, they can park for free. The badge is not restricted to a specific vehicle; it covers any vehicle the Blue Badge holder drives or is a passenger in.

In England, a Blue Badge costs £10, in Scotland £20 and in Wales it is free. Local councils manage the scheme and verify eligibility. A Blue Badge is valid for three years, after which a new application can be made.

Disabled individuals may qualify for a grant to modify the home they are moving into, including installing a stair lift or ramps. They may also be eligible for financial assistance with moving costs.
