Halloween shows most popular moving day of 2025

Research by Compare My Move revealed that Halloween, October 31st, was the most popular moving day in 2025, with just under 2,500 people in the UK relocating.

The research was based on an analysis of 170,000 home moves in 2025. It reveals a shift towards more home-buying completions in the autumn. In previous years, the summer months of July and August were the favourite times to move.

A key reason why buyers completed home purchases in autumn 2025 was that they wanted to beat the end of stamp duty relief. Another factor was homebuyers delaying purchase decisions until August, when mortgage lending rates reduced. This increased the number of completions in September and October.

Moving at Halloween, therefore, was not connected with superstitions about the spooky day, but was an unexpected surge driven by logistical reasons.

Compare My Move found that the most popular day to move was Friday, when 28% of home moves took place. This is not surprising as it allows movers to spend the whole weekend settling in. The end of the month is also a popular time to move to a new home as it coincides with mortgage payment schedules and other monthly bills.
