Common items people lose when moving home revealed

A survey of 1,000 people who moved house in the last 12 months revealed the most common items lost during a move.

The survey, commissioned by the HMRC app, found that the most frequently lost items were chargers, followed by screws for furniture assembly and clothing. Other commonly lost items are books, single shoes, socks, tools, remote controllers, jewellery and money.

As well as being inconvenient, replacing lost items can be costly. A total of 14% of survey respondents paid more than £150 to replace lost possessions.

Most people worry about losing important documents, especially passports, driving licences and birth certificates. The HMRC app is designed to keep tax information secure and safe if paper tax documents are lost during a house move. Sarah McMann, chief digital product owner for the HMRC app, said:

“We can help ease that pressure by keeping your tax information safe, secure and easy to access.”

80% of survey respondents say that they would value an app that stores digital copies of important documents in case they are lost.

Around 90% of respondents find moving stressful, particularly the physical move. A majority of respondents (77%) said keeping track of all their possessions during the move causes stress and anxiety.
