Research suggests moving home is the most stressful life event

Two-thirds of adults have named moving home as the most stressful event in life.

Researchers commissioned by the temporary car insurance provider Tempcover asked 2,000 adults about their experiences of moving home. As moving is so stressful, 44% said they don’t want to move home again.

Moving belongings was a particularly painful process for many, with 39% handling the move themselves instead of using professionals. Without the aid of a large moving van, moving everything took an average of around five journeys between the old and new homes. Unsurprisingly, 81% of people said this left them exhausted, while 37% felt the large number of items that needed packing was a lot to put up with.

10% of respondents reported that they gave large furniture away or sold it because they had no means of transporting big items.

The research found that, on average, planning for a home move starts three months in advance.

Pauk Gilshan, the CEO of Tempcover, said:

“Moving house is often talked about as an exciting fresh start, but for many people the logistical reality is far more challenging.”

From trying to fit belongings into the family car to dealing with complex paperwork, there is a huge to-do list to deal with when moving home. Many feel overwhelmed by the seemingly never-ending jobs that need doing.

As a long-established Merseyside removal company, Merseyside Movers & Storers understands the stress of moving home. Our expert team can make moving less painful by packing for you and then safely and securely transporting everything to your new home.
