Six items to remove from lofts during hot weather

As temperatures rise in late spring and summer, a storage expert has warned that heat-sensitive items stored in lofts can be damaged.

Storage expert Chris Huttton says that many people don’t realise how high temperatures in poorly ventilated lofts can reach. He says:

“That kind of heat build-up can quietly damage belongings over time without homeowners noticing until it’s too late. If something is sentimental, valuable or sensitive to heat, the loft usually isn’t the safest place to keep it long-term.”

He identifies six common items that are at risk.

1. Photos can fade, warp and become damaged in high heat.

2. Electronics such as laptops, gaming consoles and chargers can stop working when internal components, batteries or screens fail due to excessive heat.

3. Paper documents in hot and damp weather conditions can fade, curl and develop mould spots.

4. Candles can soften and warp when too hot or scented candles can lose their fragrance.

5. Wood furniture can split, warp or be weakened when too hot.

6. Vinyl records warp when too hot, making them unplayable.

Late spring is seen as an ideal time to declutter the home and remove any heat-sensitive items from the loft. Anything you need to keep but do not have space for can be taken to a self storage unit.
