One in five move house after a relationship change

Research by the Open Property Data Association (OPDA) reveals that over a fifth (21%) of people who move home say a change in their relationship drove their move. In Wales, the percentage is higher, sitting at 28%.

The data is based on a survey of 5,000 people who have recently bought a home and moved into it. It is published in the OPDA’s annual Future of Homebuying report. The survey does not say whether the move was due to starting or ending a relationship.

A failed relationship causes emotional strain, with the home moving process adding additional stress and frustration. A third of survey respondents state that a key frustration is the time it takes to exchange contracts when buying a home. 27% complain that chasing updates when buying a home is particularly stressful.

On top of the emotional toil relationship failures cause and the practical difficulties of home buying, another major cause of stress is the number of house sales that fall through, with more than half of sales not completing. Many say that the stress of home buying and moving has put them off moving again.

The chair of OPDA, Maria Harris, calls for changes in the home-buying system to make it faster and more transparent. The report shows that there is a clear appetite for improving the home-buying process.
