A canine expert has warned dog-owning home movers that they could be fined £500 if they forget an essential task.
Michael Nelson, a dog specialist at Kennel House a supplier of wooden doghouses, has advised that neglecting to update a dog’s microchip details could result in a £500 fine. He commented:
“A microchip feels like something you sort once when your dog is young and then never have to think about again, so I can see why changing the details gets missed during a house move.”
Dog owners are required to update the address details related to the microchip within 21 days of moving home. Apart from risking a fine for non-compliance, if the dog goes missing, failure to update the address makes it more difficult to trace the dog owners. The Dogs Trust says that every year, many stray dogs cannot be quickly returned to owners because of outdated microchip information.
When a pet is microchipped, its details are registered with a database company. Updating this information is easy to do online, but there may be a small fee charged. If an owner doesn’t remember which database their pet is registered with but has a microchip number, they can search online. If the number is unknown, a vet should be able to scan the animal as a way of identifying it.
