Moving to Ireland from the UK is a major life change. In this blog, we’re providing a short checklist of points you need to remember organising in advance when moving to Ireland.
1. Check residency requirements
UK citizens can live, work and study in Ireland without needing a visa. However, non-UK and non-EU citizens require permits, so bear this in mind if it applies to you or someone moving with you.
2. Create a budget
There are several costs involved in moving, including shipping costs and insurance. Most personal belongings are exempt from customs duty, but VAT may be charged on new furniture or vehicles.
It’s also a good idea to set aside money needed on the journey for refreshments and miscellaneous expenses.
3. Notify relevant authorities
HMRC and other official bodies need notifying that you are moving from the UK. If you don’t inform them, you will still be considered as liable for any taxes or other arrangements from when you lived in the UK.
4. Register with GP
UK citizens who intend to live in Ireland for at least a year are entitled to state healthcare. Many health services are free, but there are some charges. Access for non-UK citizens depends on their status and country of origin.
Before moving or shortly afterwards, remember to register with an Irish GP.
5. Arrange utilities
Make sure that utilities such as electricity gas and broadband are in your name and switched on at your new home.
