7 things you must do before moving – or face a hefty fine

When relocating, whether buying or renting, there are at least seven actions that must be taken to avoid incurring fines of up to £5,000. Most of these actions are easy to do online.

1. TV licence

It’s important to update your TV licence address details if you wish to watch BBC channels on your television and via the BBC iPlayer on a laptop or tablet. Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

2. DVLA

Ensure that the DVLA has been notified of your new address so that the vehicle logbook (V5C) and driving licence records are changed. Neglecting this may lead to a fine of £1,000.

3. Insurance

Tell your insurance providers your new address. If you don’t, any future claims may be refused. The insurers may change the premiums.

4. Pet’s microchip

Change the record on your pet’s microchip with their new location. This can aid in finding them should they become lost after the move.

5. Local council

Notify the local council about moving to prevent unnecessary charges for council tax after moving.

6. HMRC and DWP

Contact the HMRC and DWP if you receive a pension or benefits as they must legally be informed about changes of addresses.

7. Utlilies

Cancel energy, water and WiFi services and arrange for them to be available at the new address.
