Australian firm commits to plastic-free removals

Nuss Relocations in Sydney, Australia no longer uses plastic packaging materials when moving its clients.

The moving industry is facing increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. There are various methods to do this. Solar panels on the rooftops of offices and warehouses can help generate renewable energy. Furthermore, fuel-efficient or electric vans can significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Another important way to be more sustainable is to use less plastic. Nuss Relocations was concerned about how much plastic packaging was used in removals and then thrown into landfills after items were unpacked. The company also wanted to find an alternative to plastic packing tape. They tried paper tape sourced locally, but found they were not strong enough to secure the cardboard packing boxes they used. They eventually found a strong paper tape called PleatWrap, which they imported from France. Though this involved carbon emissions from transporting the tape to Australia, the total carbon footprint of an individual roll of tape shipped in a full container is very low.

Nuss Relocations now uses cardboard boxes made from recycled materials. Instead of plastic bubble wrap, they used to use bleached newspapers but now use unbleached paper to wrap delicate items.

The company found that there was no resistance from their packing team to the move to plastic-free moving, and that customers appreciate its more environmentally friendly approach.
