Homebuyers who work in large UK cities are finding that homes near the city centre are too expensive.
This has led to a trend of looking beyond city boundaries for better home prices in areas with good transportation links. To help homebuyers, the property website Zoopla has recently identified locations with lower house prices that are within convenient travel distances to major cities.
For those working in London, Zoopla names Peterborough as the location where the biggest savings can be made, with the average house price of £238,800 being 50% lower than the average London house cost of £561,000. It takes less than an hour by train from Peterborough to King’s Cross station in London.
For the best balance of house price and journey time, Purfleet-on-Thames homes’ average cost is £248,000, but the train commute time to London is only 29 minutes.
Zoopla reveals that it is not just London that has out-of-city locations where housing is more affordable. They highlight areas near Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Newcastle and other cities with cheaper housing.
Lower house prices are not the only financial consideration when making moving decisions. Rail fares are very expensive and tend to rise every year. Parking at stations can also be costly.
