Insurance comparison site GoCompare surveyed 2,002 people about what they forgot when moving home. At the top of the list was forgetting to redirect the post from their old address, with 11% failing to complete this important task.
Not labelling boxes was second on the list, with 9% of those surveyed saying that they didn’t mark boxes, making it difficult to organise their belongings when they arrived at the new home.
8% did not clean their old home before moving, and 7% forgot to hand over their spare keys to the new occupants of their old home.
Perhaps the biggest blunders in terms of life impact admitted by survey respondents were leaving important documents behind and forgetting to inform utility companies and insurers about the move.
Some left their chargers and cords behind. Subscriptions such as meal kits and health supplements were not cancelled or transferred,
GoCompare home insurance expert Nathan Blackler said:
“Packing up your life is a huge job, so it’s no surprise that a few tasks can slip through the cracks.”
To avoid forgetting things when you move, plan well ahead and make a list of everything that needs doing. Make sure that you arrange with Royal Mail to redirect the post. Inform insurers, DVLA and the local council of your address change. Arrange new home insurance and take photos of the final meter readings,
