Construction has commenced on 270 extra care apartments for older adults across two sites in Southport.
These apartments will range from one to three bedrooms, offered at affordable rents or through shared ownership schemes. The apartments are being developed by the housing association Torus, and are expected to be completed by 2028.
They will incorporate various energy-efficient technologies designed to reduce energy bills. The buildings feature steel frames that are constructed off-site and then assembled using cranes. Once the frames are in place, they will be clad in bricks. This method allows for quicker construction compared to traditional brick buildings.
Extra care apartments are self-contained homes that come with on-site support services, providing a middle ground between living independently at home and moving into a residential care facility for older or disabled individuals.
Chris Brown, Managing Director of Torus Developments, stated:
“Providing high-quality, purpose-built properties for the area’s ageing population is vitally important. These two extra-care schemes will provide everything people need to live independently or with some additional support.”
