Expats find cultural adaptation challenging

A report by Crown Relocations has revealed that British citizens moving abroad find cultural differences more challenging than expected.

The report was based on a survey of 1,000 expats in 73 countries, with 56% saying that they found cultural adaptation difficult.

Another issue highlighted in the report, titled “Relocating in a Changing World: 2024 Global Expatriate Survey”, is how technology can make adapting to an unfamiliar country more difficult. Part of the problem is that varied tech systems are found in different countries. Expats particularly find it problematic to cope with the cashless economies that many countries have created.

Sherry Liu, Vice President of Moving Services for Crown Relocations, says that although relocation abroad is more accessible, many don’t realise how varied and diverse different parts of the world are. She says:

“Accounting and being ready for cultural adaptation are areas often overlooked during a move.”

Though social media and messaging apps make it easy to communicate with people of diverse cultures, Sherry Lui believes that successful cultural adaptation requires face-to-face relationship building.

Whilst settling in a new country with a different culture is not easy, many Brits have moved abroad and had successful happy lives that include making friends with local people and appreciating their culture.

At Merseyside Movers & Storers, we may not be able to help with cultural adaptation, but as a Liverpool removal company with extensive experience in long distance removals, we’ll take care of safely transporting your belongings to your new overseas home.
