Financial companies order workers to return to offices

Barclays is the latest financial company to call for employees to work from home less often and return to the office for at least three days a week.

HSBC and Société Générale have also increased their mandatory office working time. In June 2026, TSB and Santander told employees to return to the offices.

Over the last 18 months in the USA, two of the largest banks, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, told staff to work in the offices for at least five days a week.

Around half of Barclays’ 45,000 staff are expected to be affected by these changes to work pattern policies. Senior staff are expected to work at least four days a week in the offices, while others are required to attend the office for three days or more.

A spokesperson for Barclays said:

“Most of our colleagues who are not already working in the office three days will align with our broader approach across the bank.”

Working remotely from home became the norm for many employees during and after the COVID pandemic, leading many companies to downsize their office space. There is now a trend to ask remote workers to return to the office for at least part of the working week. This is expected to increase the demand for more office space.
