Five tips on moving your wine collection

Fine wines require careful packing and handling when moving home. The condition of the wine can be affected by temperature and exposure to light. These tips will help you relocate your valuable wine collection safely.

1. Have a high-value wine collection appraised

Appraise the worth of each high-value bottle of wine, as this will be required when fully insuring the collection in case of damage during transit.

2. Check alcohol regulations

Moving wine within the UK is legal, but across non-UK country borders alcohol may be subject to restrictions and duties. It is illegal to import wine into some countries. Research the appropriate regulations before moving wine.

3. Carefully pack

Special care is needed to pack the wine bottles so that they won’t get damaged. Use specialised wine packing boxes or ask your removal service to do this for you.

Corked wines should be put into the moving van on their side or upside down to prevent the corks from drying out.

4. Allow the bottles to rest

Allow any bottles of fine wine you intend to drink after moving to rest for at least seven days before opening to allow any sediment to settle.

5. Use an experienced moving company

If your wine collection is valuable, ask your moving company if they have any experience in moving wine. If not, consider using a wine relocation specialist.
