Guide to moving home while pregnant

If you are pregnant when moving home this can add extra stress when organizing the move, but with careful planning and the support of friends and family, you can reduce moving stress.

Pregnant women, particularly during the third trimester, have a strong nesting instinct that provides an energy surge that can be directed to organizing and planning the nursery room in the new home.

Packing can be stressful unless time is taken, beginning a month before the move, so it might be best to start with items that are not often used. Avoid bending, lifting or moving heavy loads. Let others do this for you.

Make a list of essential pregnancy items needed on moving day including snacks, prenatal vitamins and maternity wear. Pack them in a separate box and, if possible, take them in your car rather than the removal van. If the baby is due soon, also have a box of items you will need at the hospital in case of early labour.

Throughout the process, be sure to pay attention to your body signals. You can eat snacks if feeling hungry, and remember to rest if tired or sluggish.

If you have any baby items for after the birth, pack them separately and mark on the box that they are to be placed in the nursery area of the new home.
