A report by Access Self Storage reveals that nearly half (49%) of young adults from the millennial and Gen Z generations intend to return to living with their parents.
The main reason for this is the high cost of rent and other substantial living expenses. Living with parents allows young adults to save money, pay off debts, and set aside funds to purchase their own home.
Many who have moved back experience mixed emotions. Although it makes financial sense, there is an emotional cost to obeying parents’ house rules, maintaining a chosen lifestyle and avoiding disagreements over political views.
Moving back to the parents’ house used to be seen as a failure, but now it is regarded as a sensible response to the high cost of living.
Parents worry about storing furniture, bikes, work-from-home equipment, and large boxes of belongings that arrive with returning children and their partners. The children often hesitate to part with anything. Self-storage offers a practical solution to this challenge. Items not needed in the family home can be stored until a new home is found.
Self storage industry expert Jan-Albert Fourie said:
“Storage plays an important role in helping people make that move without feeling like they’re giving up everything they’ve worked for.”
