Housing association’s top tips for pet owners moving home

Platform Home Ownership, a West Midlands housing association, has advised pet owners how to make their new home suitable for cats or dogs.

They advise first checking the new home for dangers to pets before the animals enter the home. Loose cables, personal items, cleaning chemicals and other items should be kept out of reach so that they are not chewed or knocked over by an excitable or agitated pet.

When buying furniture and fabrics for the new home, choose stainproof materials that are easily cleaned in case the pet has an accident. Use low-VOC washable paint that does not harm pets.

It may take a while for a new pet to settle in the home. It helps to provide a cosy, quiet pet space with soft bedding, or use a pet crate as a safe space to help a pet adjust to the new environment.

Register pets with a local vet practice and change the address details on their microchip record. If you have pet insurance, notify the insurer of the change of address.

The Marketing Manager at Platform Home Ownership, Sabina Cox, said:

“We hope these tips help owners settle in quickly, and with peace of mind that their pets can enjoy their new home safely and comfortably.”
