How to help your dog settle in after moving home

Moving home is a stressful experience for both humans and pets. A top dog trainer has advised on how to help your dog settle into their new home.

Zazie Todd, PhD, a dog trainer, author and co-host of the Pawsitive Post podcast, has offered her advice on how to treat your dog after a move.

A new home is full of unfamiliar smells and sounds, which can cause stress in the dog that can lead to unusual behaviour. She suggests allowing your dog time to adjust to get used to new sensations.

Dr Todd suggests making sure the dog has its normal routine:

“Stick to the same routine that you used to have at your previous home. Give meals at the same time, take walks at the same time, play games at the same time. Dogs like to have a routine, and it can help them to feel secure.”

Walking in the neighbourhood introduces your pet to the new area, but be sure keep the dog on a lead. If they run off, they may not be able to find their way back home in an unfamiliar location.

A dog in a new home may crave more attention, so spend more time with them playing and walking until they are more settled. Be patient as it takes a while to get used to their new home.
