How to move house with pets

Moving home with pets needs careful planning to ensure they arrive safe and sound at the new home.

Before the move

Before moving day, obtain pet carriers and familiarise your pets with using them so that they feel comfortable during the move.

Buy a new collar tag with updated contact information. Go online the day before the move to change your contact details on your pet’s microchip records.

Register your pets with a vet located near the new home.

Prepare a pet’s essential bag that contains food, water, medications, poo bags and any other pet-related items you may need when moving.

Let the moving company know that you have pets and where they are so they won’t disturb them.

Moving day

Before transporting pets on moving day, put them in a designated room in your existing home with a bed, toys, food, and water. Keep the pets secure in this room to prevent them from escaping or being disturbed by the moving team. If possible, have a friend or family member known to the pets look after them.

Move the pets last, preferably in your car rather than the removal van.

After the move

It may take a while for your pets to settle in the new home. Allow them time to explore the new home, but you might want to keep cats indoors for the first few weeks. Make sure that the home is escape-proof for your dogs with no gaps in the fence, or hedges, and make sure gates stay closed.

Keep your pet’s usual routine of walking, feeding, and playing.

If it takes some time for pets to adjust to their new home, so be patient.

Other pets

The above advice applies to cats and dogs, but some is also applicable to rabbits and guinea pigs.

Tropical fish require specialized handling. Search ‘moving tropical fish’ for detailed instructions. Moving reptiles can be complex, so you may need to consult with a reptile specialist for help.
