In 2025, property experts have noted that there was a shift towards a fully digital homebuying process.
According to Maria Harris, Chair of the Open Property Data Association (OPDA), 2025 marked the year when digital home buying transitioned from a concept to reality. The OPDA was established to streamline the home-moving process and make it easier through digital adoption and the sharing of open data.
A key factor in the move to digital buying was the UK government’s commitment to the digitisation of property data. The government pledged to ensure that data on land ownership, planning and conveyancing information is easily accessible to all parties involved in the home-buying and selling process.
The move to digitisation reduces the time taken to complete a home purchase, which currently averages seven months. It is also expected that digital homebuying will decrease the number of failed transactions and lower fees. Another benefit of digital homebuying is the reduction of emotional stress associated with the homebuying process.
The Trust Framework is a security initiative developed in 2025 by the OPDA in partnership with the Digital Property Market Steering Group (DPMSG) to safeguard property data. Another 2025 milestone in simplifying digital homebuying was the launch of the CFIT Coalition, which promotes cross-sector collaboration between conveyancers, lenders and estate agents.
