Is Christmas a good time to move to a new home?

The Christmas period is generally regarded as a bad time to move to a new home.

Days are cold and shorter, financial priorities shift to spending money on presents, festive food, and drink. Data from the website Compare My Move reveals that you could save £1,000 by moving in December or January.

House prices are, on average, cheaper in winter, and this also means paying less stamp duty. First-time buyers save even more with stamp duty relief.

Compare My Move found that other fees are less in winter including property surveys and conveyancing.

Removal service costs tend to be lower in the quieter winter periods compared to spring and summer. During shorter daylight hours some removal services may work shorter hours or spread the move over two days for long distance removals.

If you want to save money then moving around Christmas is a good idea, but not Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, you’ll be unable to find a removal service prepared to work during the Christmas holidays.

If you have not yet found a house to buy, be aware that between Boxing Day and New Year there is a surge in people looking for houses, with an increased risk of people making high offers that outbid you.
