Large increase in house purchases reported for start of 2026

There has been a notable rise in homebuying early in 2026, according to data collected by moving service comparison site Reallymoving. The number of conveyancing registrations during the first two weeks of January increased by 74% compared to the same period in 2025.

Conveyancing, survey activities and removal quote enquiries also rose by 58% from January 1st to 15th.

Rob Houghton, CEO of Reallymoving, commented:

“Rather than signalling a broad resurgence in market confidence, the figures suggest that pent-up demand from the autumn is now being fulfilled.”

He added that the increase in visitors to property websites mainly comes from individuals committed to a house move rather than casual browsers. The large increase in the number of people researching conveyancing and removal services indicates buyers are preparing to move soon, opting for this over waiting for spring. For instance, many homeowners are relocating because of new jobs or expanding families, and want to move as quickly as possible.

Reallymoving’s data reveals that 59% of early January’s conveyancing registrations were from first-time buyers. Homebuyers are encouraged by lower mortgage rates and often find discounts for properties that have been on the market longer.

Approximately 18% of buyers are moving to a larger house, while only 4% are downsizing to a smaller one.
