Liverpool residents forced to move due to rent increases

People renting homes in the Welsh Streets area of Liverpool recently faced a large annual rent increase, meaning they can no longer afford to live there.

One resident interviewed by BBC Radio Merseyside reported that their monthly rent has risen by £300 a month – an extra 31% – which is more than they can afford. They commented:

“We will have to move. There is no means of us finding the money and guaranteeing that we can find it.”

According to the Office for National Statistics, the average monthly cost of renting a home in Liverpool has increased from £560 in January 2015 to £819 in January 2025.

Housing charity Shelter says that help is available for some tenants who cannot afford the rent increase. Low-income households may be able to claim Universal Credit – or, if they are a pensioner, housing benefits. People on benefits may also be eligible for discretionary housing payments.

If tenants can no longer afford to pay rent and the landlord wants them to move out, the latter must give adequate notice or obtain a court order to end the tenancy. This can take more than a month, which gives the tenants time to find a cheaper rented property.

If you are thinking of moving to a cheaper rented home, you will need a removal service that charges reasonable fees. Merseyside Movers & Storers specialises in house removals in Liverpool.
