Mayor outlines Liverpool’s housing policy

Steve Rotheram, the Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, has outlined plans to provide safe, affordable and sustainable housing in Liverpool.

The new plans are, according to the mayor, designed to make the city:

“…the best place to grow up, raise a family, and build a business.”

The principles behind the policies for Liverpool housing are security, aspiration and quality of life. An example of these principles in action is the LCR Future Homes programme’s waterfront development, which is the first “zero bills” housing project in Liverpool. Each house generates energy equal to the amount it uses.

The Brownfield First policy is unlocking the development opportunities on brownfield sites. For instance, the Liverpool North New Town site has the potential for 10,000 new homes.

Steve Rotheram emphasises that the city’s housing policies are not just concerned with new houses; the council is also tackling improvements to existing homes. Over 10,000 homes are being upgraded with insulation, heat pumps and solar panels, which are cheaper to run and have less impact on the environment.

The mayor supports the government’s Affordable Homes Programme that makes it easier for Liverpool residents to buy a new home. He says that a progressive housing approach is a joint project between local and national government:

“Working together, national and local government can help thousands more families find not just a house, but a place they can genuinely call home.”
