Moving stress deterring older home movers

A survey by the HomeOwners Alliance reveals that despite considering a home move, 41% of people over 55 say that the stress of moving was the main reason that stopped them from making a move.

The second main reason for not moving was the lack of suitable housing, which prevented 35% of older people from moving. There is a particular shortage of bungalows, which are the most popular choice for those aged over 55. Bungalows account for just 1% of new build homes, compared to 11% in 1990.

The high cost of moving home is an issue for some older people, with 24% saying that moving costs are too expensive. A similar percentage, 23% of respondents said that the cost of homes is what has put them off moving.

Commenting on the survey results, Paula Higson, the CEO of the HomeOwners Alliance, said:

“No one wants to make their life more stressful and as we age the prospect of a house move can be overwhelming. Buying and selling a home is too uncertain, takes too long, and is too expensive.”

Research by Barclays Bank found that there is an increase in first-time buyers purchasing “forever homes” with the intention of staying put. They say that they do not expect to move when they get older.
