A new study by GoCompare Home Insurance found that nearly a quarter (23.1%) of home movers don’t use a removal company, leaving their possessions uninsured during the move.
Not using a removal company can save on initial moving costs, but if any items are damaged or lost during the move, they can be expensive to repair or replace. GoCompare found that 23.7% of people lose at least one item when moving,
GoCompare reminds people that contents insurance is usually invalid if a professional service is not used. They found that 47.4% of movers are unaware of this insurance condition. GoCompare recommends that, before a house move, the contents insurance policy should be checked to see if items in transit are covered or extra protection is required,

“It’s strongly worth considering using a removals company for your move if you can. As well as taking the heavy lifting out of moving, contents insurance policies will only cover your possessions during a move if you use a professional removals firm. So, while doing a DIY move might cut costs at first, you could lose out in the long-term if something goes wrong.“
