New cost of moving home revealed

The 2024 Reallymoving Cost of Moving Report discloses that it costs on average nearly £14,000 (£13,978) to move to a newly purchased home.

This cost includes stamp duty, survey, estate agent’s fees, conveyancing and removal costs. For first-time buyers who don’t pay stamp duty on homes costing less than £425,000 the cost of moving is a lot less at an average of £2,186.

Moving fees are unavoidable, but you can cut costs by finding deals on removals, conveyancing and surveys. If buying a new home, some house builders offer financial help towards moving costs.

Declutter so that there is less stuff to take to the new home. It may also be a good idea to sell unwanted belongings online or via a car boot sale to make money to put towards moving costs.

You may obtain cheaper removal quotes for quieter periods such as the New Year and midweek. Avoid school summer holidays when costs could be higher.

However, be wary of removal services that give extremely low quotes as they may not initially disclose extra fees or may not be reliable, and be sure to always research reviews from past clients. Check that the quote includes insurance for your belongings during transit to the new home. Book a good removal service early to avoid them being fully booked if you leave it to the last minute.
