A property expert has suggested that company offices should be aiming to move closer to major public transport routes and roads.
Scott Thorburn, asset manager at Redefine Properties, argues that doing this could reduce employees’ transport costs and improve the experience of travelling to work.
Recent fuel price rises have made it more expensive for employees to drive to work. Although fuel prices may fall, filling the car with petrol or diesel for commuting to work is expected to remain costly. Financial experts such as money coach Hayley Parry say that transport costs account for a large portion of workers’ weekly budget.
Long commutes are not only expensive but also fatiguing, which can reduce productivity. One solution for some firms is home working, but many organisations are choosing to return to office-based work for the foreseeable future.
Scott Thorburn says that companies need to take a long-term view of where their offices are located and how accessible they are. His company, Redefine Properties, asked employees about their preferred working model. A majority of them said they prefer a hybrid working system, working part of the time from home and the rest at a flexible, local office network.
