A survey by Compare My Move found that moving home is a significant cause of anxiety, with some respondents saying moving is more stressful than childbirth.
The survey asked 2,000 households to rank how stressful major life events are. The death of a family member was voted the most stressful life event, followed by caring for a sick relative and divorce. Relocating home was the next most stressful event, above childbirth and losing a friend.
Dave Sayce Compare My Move co-founder said:
“These latest survey results confirm what many of us already feel – moving home is one of life’s biggest stressful events, ranking even above having a baby.”
He suggested five ways to reduce moving stress.
1. Early planning
Plan early and break down the moving process into small, manageable steps.
2. Declutter
Get rid of unnecessary possessions so that there is less to pack.
3. Label everything
Label every box or item clearly to make unpacking and organising easier.
4. Pack an essentials box
Items such as toiletries, snacks, important documents, and other essentials you need instant access to should be packed together in a box marked ‘essentials’. This means you don’t have to rummage through several boxes to find them.
5. Book a moving company early
As soon as you have a moving date, book a reliable removal service.
