Research by the property website Rightmove has looked into some of the more superstitious tendencies that home buyers have when navigating the property market.
Friday is normally a popular day of the week to move, but when Rightmove looked at HM Land Registry completion data, it found that Friday the 13th is quieter compared to other Fridays. This could mean that those who are not superstitious may be able to negotiate cheaper moving rates for these quiet Fridays.
Rightmove also looked at houses with the street number 13. The average price of a home is £364,139, but houses numbered 13 are valued at £5,521 lower than this average. These findings are based on the value of 10 million UK properties and suggest that superstitious buyers feel that it is unlucky to live in house number 13. However, those unconcerned about the number 13 may be able to buy a number 13 house at a bargain price.
Conversely, seven is regarded by many as a lucky number. Number seven homes cost on average 3% more.
In some streets, the number 13 house does not exist; there is no home numbered between 12 and 14. Some homeowners’ who move into house 13 rename them with a written name rather than a number as they believe this removes any bad luck associated with the property.
