Research reveals UK self-storage industry worth more than £1 billion

The self-storage sector in the UK has grown to a turnover of £1.3 billion a year.

The total amount of storage space available in the UK has risen by 5% over the last 12 months to 67.5 million square feet.

The majority of storage space is rented by households rather than businesses. Around 40% of private storage facility customers need storage when they move home. Homebuying chains can fall through, while completion dates can be delayed, causing people to want temporary storage.

Small businesses use storage as a cheaper and more flexible option than renting a warehouse.

New homes are also getting smaller, with many households not having enough space to store all their belongings. As a family grows, a storage room is often converted into a bedroom. A storage unit can be the solution when there is a shortage of space in the home.

The rise of home-based online businesses, too, has meant that there is a need for storage space to keep stock and equipment that is unable to fit in the home.

Home renovations are another major reason why storage is required. Belongings can be stored away from the home until building work is completed.
