Research by the Compare My Move website discovered that over half of people who move home in the UK relocate to an area ten or fewer miles away
The study shows that 27% of movers relocate to a home two miles or less away. About 12% move between two and five miles, whilst 15% travel ten to thirty miles away.
The Compare My Move data is based on an analysis of 28,000 house moves. The average distance London-based people move to is 33 miles away, compared to 37 miles in the Midlands, 39 miles in the North, 41 miles in Wales, 49 miles in the South and 57 miles in Scotland.
The main reason why people are reluctant to travel far is that they want to be close to friends and family. Many have established strong connections with a location and feel that moving more than an hour’s journey away from their home makes it difficult to see friends and family regularly.
Older people fear that when they move to a new area, they will find it difficult to make new friends. This is why it is important to retain existing friendships in the area they leave, but this is threatened if they move a long way.
Some movers feel that moving a long distance is more stressful and disruptive than moving a short distance.
