Research by broadband fibre service provider Hyperoptic has revealed how important reliable, high-speed broadband is to people moving home.
The researchers found that 45% of the people surveyed who want to move home say that good broadband is an important consideration when choosing a property to rent or buy.
These findings are based on a survey of 2,000 UK adults who have moved home within the previous 12 months or are planning to do so.
More than a third (37%) of respondents said they do not feel settled in their new home until the broadband is fully up and running. Without broadband, many reported feeling frustrated and stressed.
The main reasons for needing broadband when moving into a new home are accessing online banking services and arranging utility accounts.
Moving day is when households most want to be online. Checking that broadband is working, or arranging a new broadband service, often takes priority over unpacking. If broadband is not working on the first day in a new home, 79% of survey respondents expect to be online within two to three days.
Moving home often prompts people to reassess their broadband needs. It is a time to consider whether the household is receiving good value for money from its current broadband contract or whether faster broadband speeds are required.
