RHS highlights new home garden issues

Britain’s leading garden charity, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), has published garden advice for people moving to a new build home.

It says that most people focus on the home’s interior, and do not think about what needs to be done to the garden.

The RHS says that a common new build issue to be aware of is poor soil that has been compacted and contains rubble, weeds and rubbish. You must dig over the soil and remove the debris before adding plants. It’s a good idea to install paved paths next to planting areas to avoid walking on wet soil whilst gardening.

Soil conditioners like manure or mulch help the soil retain moisture, suppress weeds and deter pests. The RHS says:

“Mulches can be split into two main groups, biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Both types suppress weeds by blocking sunlight, which is needed to germinate and grow weed seeds, and conserve moisture by reducing evaporation from the soil surface.”

Once the soil has been cleared and soil improver added, you can start creating your dream garden. If you have the budget, consider hiring a professional landscape gardener to design a beautiful garden.

Using the right tools for gardening saves time and improves efficiency. Make sure you take all your gardening tools from your old home to the new one.
