Statistics highlight major unclaimed energy credits after moving home

The regulator Ofgen has revealed that there is around £240 million left in closed UK energy accounts.

If you move home, you are expected to close your gas and electricity accounts at the home you move from. Energy companies have an obligation to refund any outstanding credit on the account. This usually happens automatically. However, a small number of customers forget to check that the money has been paid into their bank account, or have not notified the energy companies of their new contact details. Many customers are owed over £100, which they can claim back.

The director general of Ofgen, Tim Jarvis, said:

“With almost two million closed accounts currently in credit, the message is clear – if you’ve moved in the last five years, reach out to your old supplier, provide them with the correct information, and you could be due a refund”

Energy UK advises that any direct debits to the energy companies should not be cancelled until the final bill has been settled.

Energy companies have to send a final bill within six weeks, and pay any refunds within ten days of the final bill being issued.

Moving home is expensive, so it makes sense to check that any funds left in closed accounts are claimed.
