Stats show Brits moving home less often

Compare My Move research has revealed that people in Britain move on average six times in their lifetime.

Research seven years ago found that people moved on average eight times over their lifetime. The reasons for this decline in home moves are probably due to the rising cost of moving. New research shows there has been an increase in legal fees, surveys, Stamp Duty, and other moving costs.

The average price of a house in 1998 was £61,026, and £610 stamp duty was charged. By 2008, the average house cost had risen to £176,883, with a Stamp Duty of £1,769. The current 2025 average house price is £286,327 with Stamp Duty costing £4,316, a 700% increase from 1998 Stamp Duty levels.

The Compare My Move research is based on a survey of 2,000 people who moved home recently. Over a quarter of them (29%) had moved two or three times, 32% four to six times, and 15% over seven times. A small number (7%) had moved between ten and twelve times, and 7% over twelve times.

The main reasons for moving were downsizing (18%), upsizing (16%), lifestyle changes (15%) and work-related moves (3%).

The number of household moves peaked during the 1980s financial boom. In 2009, the average person moved every 25.89 years, but by 2017, this had reduced to every 22.7 years.
