Study highlights falling willingness to move home

A new survey commissioned by the HomeOwners Alliance found that 19% of survey respondents considered moving home in the last two years but decided not to.

There were five primary reasons they gave that prevented them from moving. From those who decided against moving, 35% said high house prices make it difficult to afford to buy a home. Moving stress is a barrier to moving also cited by 35% of respondents. The rising cost of moving was the reason that 28% decided not to move. Lack of suitable housing prevented 27% of respondents from buying a new home, while stamp duty costs stopped 24% of respondents from moving.

The chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, Paula Higgins, said:

“With over 800,000 homeowners shelving their moving plans, we’re seeing families trapped in unsuitable homes, unable to upsize for growing children or downsize as they age.”

She wants the government to help make it easier to move. Although the government has no control over house prices, it could reduce stamp duty and develop a housing strategy that encourages housebuilders to construct a wider range of home sizes, many of which would be offered at more affordable prices.
