Survey reveals what homebuyers wished they’d known before buying

Property website Zoopla asked 2,600 homebuyers about what they should have known before buying a house.

Underestimating the emotional stress of buying a home was named by 62% of survey respondents as one of the top things they were unprepared for. The main cause of stress was the buying process not going smoothly, with 18% of buyers saying that the purchase nearly fell through because of problems in the buying chain.

Many regretted not speaking to the neighbours of the property they were buying. Neighbours have useful local knowledge about the neighbourhood.

Over half (52%) of respondents wish they had decluttered earlier before the move to get rid of items they didn’t need at the new home. A third confessed that they should have thrown out more stuff and not held onto things for nostalgic reasons.

Many surveyed buyers regretted not researching technology issues better with some complaining of slow broadband speeds and weak mobile phone signal strength at the new property.

Some respondents complained about having to pay unexpected hidden moving costs. Of the 39% who paid hidden charges, 44% said they paid an extra £500 or more, 30% were charged more than £1,000 and 15% were charged over £1,500 extra.

It is better to use a company like Merseyside Movers & Storers to avoid hidden costs. As a trusted Liverpool removal company, we believe in transparent quotes for removals without levying extra charges when moving. This means you can accurately budget for the cost of moving to your new home.
