The importance of offsite data copies

Almost all businesses keep sensitive data, including customer personal and bank details, research and development plans, private email conversations, and sales figures.

If this data is destroyed without backup copies of the data, in a fire, for example, a business will find it difficult to recover from this disaster. This is why it’s a very smart idea for business to make backups of their data.

The backup procedure used to be simple. At the end of each business day or week, a tape or disk backup of all the data on the company server is made and stored offsite. If there is a fire or computers are stolen, the backup tape can be used to quickly get the business up and running again.

Nowadays, there is a trend toward cloud storage to keep data safe, with some businesses having no data on physical media onsite. This is fairly secure, but there is a remote possibility that the cloud storage service has an outage that interrupts its service or, in the worst case scenario, company data is corrupted.

Some businesses now adapt a dual strategy of backing up data on cloud storage and also making a copy on physical media such as hard disks or tape which are stored offsite. This means that an employee physically moves the backup media to offsite storage, but for some companies, this is worth it for extra security.
