According to Simpson Packaging, suppliers of packaging materials, people moving home are increasingly wanting more sustainable packaging.
They want packaging to have two key properties: providing protection for fragile items and not harming the environment. This means moving away from using plastics, polystyrene and polythene.
The traditional way to pack small items is in a cardboard box, which is light, strong and sustainable. In recent years, boxes have been made stronger, with glue and paper tape replacing the need for metal staples to secure them. This means that cardboard boxes can easily be pulped for recycling without having to remove metal materials.
Bubble wrap is used to protect fragile items, but it is made from a type of plastic. A more sustainable alternative would be paper blankets, which are on a roll, for easy dispensing. Paper packaging is 100% recyclable and can contain recycled materials.
Polystyrene chips are used to fill spaces in boxes. Chips made from starch or paper are a sustainable option. Paper air cushions are also effective in preventing breakages. Polythene has traditionally been used to protect documents. Paper document wallets are another potential alternative.
For larger items such as bikes, chairs and pictures, bespoke bags made from paper have been developed. Preformed furniture and mattress covers made from 100% recycled paper are another environmentally friendly option.
