The one vital check often forgotten when moving home

A heating expert was suggested that people moving home must make an essential check when relocating.

There is a long list of boxes to tick when moving home, but Adam Knight, chief engineer of boiler installers BOXIT says that there is one vital check that is often overlooked that, left undone, could be a danger to the household. He says that the gas safety status check is as important for safety as changing the locks.

If you move to rented accommodation, the landlord is legally required to service the gas boiler annually and have a gas safe inspection. They should provide the new tenants with proof of this. Homeowners do not have this legal obligation, but most have an annual boiler service and a gas inspection. However, Adam Knight warns that there are many gas systems in homes that have not been checked for years.

There are around 40 deaths and 440 hospital admissions caused by carbon monoxide poisoning every year. Carbon monoxide can leak from a faulty gas heating system that is poorly maintained or incorrectly installed. Knight suggests making sure there is a working carbon monoxide alarm, and that you know where the gas supply shut-off is.

Before the completion of a house sale, ask to see the Gas Safe document. If this does not exist, or it is over a year old, arrange for a gas safe engineer visit.
