The top five unexpected moving costs

Consumer organisation Which? has named the top five costs that surprised people when moving home.

A survey by Which? discovered that one in five people who moved homes in the last three years faced unexpected costs. They asked people to name costs that surprised them, and Which? compiled a list of the top five.

1. Decorating

Many people want to decorate their new home to make it look better and as a way of reflecting the style tastes of the new owners. The Which? Survey found that the cost of decorating a new home is often higher than expected.

2. Furniture and appliances

Though people bring their own furniture and appliances to the new home, many want to buy some new items. If starting from scratch in an empty home, the cost of furniture and appliances can be thousands of pounds.

3. Curtains and blinds

The previous owner may be willing to leave the curtains and blinds; otherwise, that’s another large expense

4. Tradesperson costs

Many are surprised at the cost of hiring a tradesperson to fix things in the home that were not identified in the house survey.

5. Stamp duty

Surprisingly, some respondents in the Which? survey were not expecting the amount of stamp duty they had to pay after the house-buying completion. Before buying a house, buyers should find out whether duty is payable and how much.
