Tuscan town offers cash incentives to move to Italy

The mayor of Radicondoli, a small Tuscan town near Florence in Italy, has announced that the town has a €400,000 fund to provide incentives to persuade people to move to the town. Financial incentives are available for both homeowners and renters.

Radicondoli was founded 1,000 years ago and is known for its medieval character, cobblestone roads, terracotta roofs and fragments of ancient defensive walls. Situated an hour south of Florence, Radicondoli is surrounded by old castles and wineries.

For renters, the town offers to pay half of the rent for the first two years. Homebuyers can qualify for grants towards purchasing a home and green energy subsidies. To be eligible for financial help, new residents must agree to live in Radicondoli for at least ten years.

The town hopes that the grants will help reverse the decline in its population, which over the last century has fallen from 3,000 to 966. There are approximately 100 empty houses out of a total of 450. Many empty homes are in good condition, requiring little work doing before moving in.

Radicondoli is one of many Italian towns with shrinking populations that offer financial incentives to people who want to live there. Most of them are in rural areas. UK residents moving to Italy will need to apply for a residential visa.
